The Catalan Tourist Board has been developing sports tourism since 2003 through its Sports Tourism Brand, a programme that brings together 120 sports companies and organisations to jointly develop the sports tourism marketing strategy for Catalonia.

The study covered the following thematic areas of analysis: volume of the sports tourism market; sports habits of the population; most popular federated sports; organisation of sport in Europe; characterisation of the sports traveller; relevant stakeholders and marketing of sports tourism; communication trends and sports tourism marketing. The second part of the study proposed the strategic lines of the marketing action plan of the Sports Tourism Brand.
